OUTED: Doctors Order Unneeded Tests For Fear Of Lawsuits
CT scans, MRIs and other pricey imaging tests are often more for the doctor's benefit than the patient's, new research confirms.

Roughly one-fifth of tests that bone and joint specialists order are because a doctor fears being sued, not because the patient needs them, a first-of-its-kind study in Pennsylvania suggests.

The study comes a day after President Barack Obama began a push to overhaul state medical malpractice laws as a way to reduce unnecessary tests that drive up health care costs.

"This study is a glimpse behind the curtain of what's happening in a doctor's mind," said its leader, Dr. John Flynn of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. If doctors sense you might second-guess them or cause trouble, "you could potentially be risking more tests being done."

Results were reported Wednesday at an American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons conference in California.

Patients expect the highest level of care and think this means the most advanced technology, Flynn said. Many patients feel better when a doctor orders lots of tests – until they get the bill...

Breast Cancer Breakthrough - Cut Your Risk of Death in Half
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed each year in the US, making it three times more common than other gynecological cancers.

Breast cancer will claim the lives of 40,000 people this year.

What is really disturbing is the speed at which breast cancer rates have risen over the past 5 decades. In 1960, one in twenty women were diagnosed—but today, it is one in seven.

The following are some important facts about this type of cancer:

• One woman in eight who lives to age 85 will develop breast cancer.
• Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women age 40 to 55.
• Fifteen percent of all breast cancers occur in women under age 45; in this age group, breast cancers are more aggressive and have lower recovery rates.
• Eighty percent of breast lumps are NON-cancerous. Seventy percent of breast cancers are found through breast self-exams.
• About 80 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of breast cancer...

Men Who Lose Hair Young At Bigger Risk For Prostate Cancer
Guys whose hair starts thinning in their 20s are twice as likely to get prostate cancer in their advanced years, French researchers say.

The finding makes some sense. In men with a certain set of genes, hair loss is driven by testosterone — and so is prostate cancer. But previous research on the relationship between hair loss and prostate cancer have had conflicting results.

The latest study, in the Annals of Oncology, may have come up with the result it did because its authors were able to distinguish between men who started going bald very young and those who had later hair loss. Other studies didn't discriminate between these really premature cases of alopecia and more typical male pattern baldness.

About 1 in 4 men have lost some hair by the time they turn 30, and two-thirds by age 60.

The French researchers studied 669 men — 388 were being treated for prostate cancer, and 281 had no history of the disease. They showed all of them pictures of different patterns and degrees of hair loss and asked them to choose how their own heads looked at the ages of 20, 30 and 40 — full head of hair, receding hairline, balding crown or both types of balding...

Active Wound Healing Can Accelerate Tumor Formation, Study Finds
Processes that are involved in active wound healing can lead to an increased risk for basal cell carcinoma in the skin.

This is the conclusion of a recent study from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institute, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The link between the development of basal cell cancers and wound healing was studied in mice with the same genetic changes that occur in human tumors. The results show that an active wound healing process can increase both the number and size of the tumors. The increase in tumour size is likely due to a general increase in cell proliferation taking place in association with wound healing whereas the increase in number is due to enhanced recruitment of cells with potential to initiate tumour formation.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in the skin is the most common cancer and earlier case reports have described an increased risk of BCC associated with both chronic and acute wounds. This new study from Karolinska Institute describes for the first time the underlying mechanism at the cellular level.

"We believe that exposure to UV radiation from the sun together with an active tissue regeneration process is a dangerous combination increasing the risk of developing basal cell carcinoma," says Rune Toftgård, Professor at Karolinska Institute and principal author of the study...

Doctor Couple Treats Couples for Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

really appreciated the topic in the Newsletter about Drs not understanding. I have been on the protocol for over a year, and am just now starting to bleed. It went from spotting(in which the gyno said I need an ultrasound, etc) to more steady, not-quite-heavy-enough to call it a full period..but I feel that my receptors are waking up! I feel that I was so hormone-depleted for so long without knowing, that I needed way more estrogen to wake up the P receptors to make a lining! All this, I learned from reading your newsletters..without that knowledge, I would have freaked. One of my doctors whom I notice is listed on your website got scared when he saw my E going up so high, he told me that my E was dangerously high... Whaaat...

Q:  I'm on the WP for Men and initially I felt great, increased libido, increased energy, improved mood, a decrease in body fat and an increase of strength in response to exercise, but now after 15 months I feel like the effectiveness has decreased. I'm worried that my estradiol levels have increased. Why would this be and should I test my estradiol with saliva?

A:   We see this with static dosing, not the rhythmic, circannual dosing of the WP. Perhaps your levels are not high enough yet. We see very little E2 conversion on rhythmic, circannual dosing which is crucial, otherwise your receptors can burn out. Serum testing is best and you can check levels between days 16-20. If your levels are good, perhaps your ill will is not T2 driven. It could be adrenal, low dopamine...
