One of the diseases of aging, there is a problem with osteoporosis, and although women are four times more likely than men to develop the disease, men also suffer from osteoporosis. In the early stages, most women will have not symptoms, but as the disease progresses, you may have weakened bones and associated symptoms such as:
- Loss of height and stooped posture.
- A curved upper back (dowager's hump).
- Back pain.
- Broken bones or fractures
These injuries might occur with a minor injury, especially when it pertains to the hip, and also the spine, or wrists. Compression fractures in the spine often cause severe back pain, however often times these fractures cause only minor symptoms.
Osteoporosis is a disease related to your bones becoming fragile and more likely to break. If it is left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. Broken bones or fractures typically happen in the spone, hips, or a wrist.
Hip fractures usually require hospitalization and major surgery. It can impair a person's ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Spinal or vertebral fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain, and deformity.
