T.S. Wiley calls synthetic hormones "hormonelike." In her book Sex, Lies, and Menopause she said, "Getting enough hormones to make yourself a real normal, physiologically rhythmic cycle just like when you were young -- that's the problem."
Many women believe that natural hormones means if it is found in nature, it's natural. Some people think if a hormone is created in a lab and it is chemically identical to the hormone in the body that it is natural. But it's important to realize that if the substance or structure is changed in a laboratory, then it becomes a synthetic hormone. It may trigger the activity of hormone receptors produced in the body – alluding to a natural occurring result, however, synthetics differ not only in structure but also in the synergistic actions they have on the body's mechanisms.
The term bio-identical hromone replacement has basically become a catch all phrase for anything that is not a synthetic hormone. It is commonly applied to look-alike molecules derived from “natural” plants that are substituted for our own body's endogenously-produced hormone molecules. So the terms “natural hormones” or "bioidentical hormones" are actually made in a laboratory by converting natural plant compounds from wild yams and soybeans into chemical molecules identical to those made in the human body for 17-beta estradiol, progesterone, or testosterone.
The Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) products from compounding pharmacies are made with plant derived raw materials that are created to mimic the molecules found in nature’s hormones found in wild yams or soybeans. Compounded BHRT is the raw materials known as 17 beta-estradiol and progesterone, and have been approved by the FDA. This is what the Wiley Protocol is made from.
Basically these sources of plant hormones mimic the chemical structure of the hormones produced by our human bodies, and the idea is that the body can’t distinguish "created" bio-identical hormones from the ones the female ovaries produce naturally. Bio-identicals are available in standardized tablets, patches, compounded creams, gels and injectable prescriptions.
The difference is that the Wiley Protocol is biomimetic, a proper scientific term used to describe the HRT because it denotes a compound that mimics a biological material in its structure and function.
The research done by Wiley shows that it may not just be the molecule that matters. The way the hormone molecule is received at the receptor site and the way receptors are provoked may be at least as important.
The Wiley Protocol is based on the premise that “bio-identical” hormones can only be truly accurately bio-identical if the hormones for replacement mimic, not only those found in the body, but mimic the natural biological process as well. In other words, natural plant derived hormones can accurately be termed bio-identical only when they are dosed in a biomimetic way which includes the natural rhythm of the body.
